Cuore (Heart) is, after Pinocchio, the most famous children book written in Italy and one of the most famous in the world. This book is composed by a sequence of anecdotes and sketches of school life, resulting mainly in a number of school fellows portraits, belonging to different social classes, and having the most various personalities: the first of the class, handsome and very intelligent, the swat with an iron will, the precocious criminal… The story of a typical school year gets untied and shows a portrait of the Turin society during the "Umbertine" age. The moral which De Amicis describes through the book pages is a moral valid for everyone, from children in Piemonte to children in Calabria, from the rich man to the poor coalman; it is a moral which underlines sacrifice and work, respect of social hierarchies and human brotherhood. Very admired at its time, "Cuore" has been the most loved book, not only by children, for many decades.
